Rapid distortion theory for compressible homogeneous turbulence under isotropic mean strain
نویسندگان
چکیده
Isotropic compressible turbulence subjected to rapid isotropic compression is studied using inviscid rapid distortion theory ~RDT! and direct numerical simulation. An exact solution to the rapid distortion problem is given. Comparisons are made between the simulation results and the RDT solution, as well as previously studied limiting cases of the RDT solution. The comparisons illustrate the range of applicability of the RDT solutions. Implications for the use of RDT results in modeling compressible turbulent flows are briefly discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. @S1070-6631~96!03209-6#

Numerical Calibration of Turbulent Compressible Models Using Rapid Distortion Theory
The study of compressible homogeneous shear flows has been largely analyzed in literature. Predictions for these flows require an improvement of existing turbulence models. Rapid-distortion-theory (RDT) has largely showed its relevance and its utility to identify compressibility effects which allow us to analyze performances of compressible turbulence models from the existing literature. This p...

In this study we highlight the influence of mean dilatation and mean density gradient on the Reynolds stress modeling of compressible, heat-releasing and supercritical turbulent flows. Firstly, the modeling of the rapid pressure-strain correlation has been extended to self-consistently account for the influence of mean dilatation. Secondly, an algebraic model for the turbulent density flux has ...
متن کاملLES on unstructured deforming meshes : towards reciprocating IC enginesBy
A variable explicit/implicit characteristics-based advection scheme that is second-order accurate in space and time has been developed recently for unstructured deforming meshes (O'Rourke & Sahota 1996a). To explore the suitability of this methodology for large-eddy simulation (LES), three subgrid-scale turbulence models have been implemented in the CHAD CFD code (O'Rourke & Sahota 1996b): a co...
متن کاملDistorted turbulence submitted to frame rotation: RDT and LES results
The stability analysis of homogeneous turbulence submitted to mean velocity gradients can be investigated from a pure mathematical point of view by examining the growth of a single Fourier mode as a perturbation to a background flow. The engineering method of studying the same flow is to use Rapid Distortion Theory (RDT) applied to a group of Fourier modes that represent a more "physical" turbu...
متن کاملTemporal decorrelations in compressible isotropic turbulence.
Temporal decorrelations in compressible isotropic turbulence are studied using the space-time correlation theory and direct numerical simulation. A swept-wave model is developed for dilatational components, while the classic random sweeping model is proposed for solenoidal components. The swept-wave model shows that the temporal decorrelations in dilatational fluctuations are dominated by two p...
